This is a brother like no other... JT

JT

Chateau de Nages - 2010
Costieres De Nimes -
This is the brother to the wine I blogged about last week:
Chateau De Nages Costieres De Nimes - Red Rhone Wine - 2010 vintage.

Total wine said they considered it a reserve.

I was back at Total Wine again and saw this wine.  I spoke with the clerk, they actually know their wine, not to mention the have very cute clerks.  The price point was $19.99 a bottle.  I just get tired of tasting the same wine, so I Thought I would try it.

I kind of have a saying I love my wines that start with J.  Josh, Justin, J. Lohr, Jordan, Joseph, and now JT.

The Gassier family owns the vineyard in Southern Rhone region.  They produce about 50,000 cases a year with about 1/3 of this being imported in the US.  This wine is 95% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre.  This wine cuts a broad swath with dark anise, plum, and steeped black current.  The finish is inlaid with graphite and smoky tobacco for definition.  This is a big red, but balanced well.

Get yourself out to Total Wine or you liquor store and make a purchase.  Well worth it.

In Love with my French Wines

I have been trying a lot of French wines lately.  I have to say you almost cannot go wrong with anything from Cotes de Rhone or Bordeaux region of France.  I just keep finding great wines.

I was at Total Wine in Norfolk, VA and for those of you that have a Total Wine.

Chateau De Nages Costieres De Nimes - Red Rhone Wine - 2010 vintage.

I drank this bottle over two nights.  The price point at Total Wine is $14.99 and it was a great wine.  I really enjoyed it.

This is a wine that combines leathery, cedary notes with touches of spice and red fruit. It's supple, creamy and inviting, with a long, softly tannic finish." Enjoy with a pork tenderloin and fruit glaze.  I had it with chicken and spinach.

This wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre, where the Mourvedre and Syrah are aged, on lees, in barrel, and the Grenache all in tank. Showing classic old vine Grenache character, with loads of licorice-laced blackberry fruit, smoked herbs, garrigue, pepper, and earthy minerality, it hits the palate with a medium to full-bodied, voluptuous and rich texture, notable balance, and a grippy, chewy finish. High quality stuff and well worth the effort to track down; it should shine for 5-8 years, if not longer.  It has received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast Magazine.  Try it, you will love it.

It will make a great impression at your table and your next dinner..... keep loving the wine :-)

Rumor... Rumor... Rumor maybe true!

Well I heard a rumor that Portugal is the new big wine maker to hit the US since Argentina did a few years ago...

That maybe true, so tonight I went to Total Wine and picked up a bottle of wine from Portugal.  Maybe it will be the biggest bestest secret ever, but the wine I had tonight was fantastic.  According to Total Wine, this wine is one of the 20 best wines of 2013 and has won several wine spectator awards.  The cost is $24.99 at Total Wine in Virginia.

Meandro Do Val Meao 2010

The grape varietals include:
45% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 13% Tinta Roriz, 5% Sousão, 4% Tinta Barroca, and 3% Tinto Cão.  This is a Portugese red blend.

Ok - so this maybe in Portugese - LOL I searched a bit and didn't find any translations, so as I write, maybe more will come available.

The region this is produced in Portugal is called Douro and this estate was started in 1877.  Meandro is the 'second' wine from this estate, and represents something of a bargain in my opinion. After being crushed, the grapes were cooled down and trodden by foot during four hours in granite lagares and then transferred to small refrigerated stainless steel vinifying vats. Each grape variety is vinified separately. This wine was matured in second and third year French Allier oak barriques.
One of the most appealing facets about Portugal's native grapes is that they are at once both familiar and unfamiliar - and make a refreshing change from the usual suspects.Warm, spice-infused nose, packed with damson and sloe, carraway and black pepper. Very classy palate; restrained black bramble fruit, cinnamon and clove - savoury and sleek, with tannins perfect for food. Excellent length; should improve further - very good indeed.

Bottom line is I loved it, but we have a lot to learn about Portuguese wines.  I think we in the US are use to the Italian regions, the French regions... and how we in the US call everything by the grape or a made up name.  Douro maybe the next Bordeaux or Sonoma... but time will tell.

Spain in 2008 is so great...

At a recent marathon wine tasting in Norfolk, VA at one of my new favorite spots, I tasted Altos de Luzon of 2008.  It is from the Jumilla region of Spain and I really enjoyed this wine.  After the tasting, this was my choice for a glass.

The wine is made from Cabernet, Mouvedre, and Tempranilla.  It is considered a table wine but I suggest you will think of it as much more.  It has complex long nose of berries and a powerfuld oak-spiced aroma.  It has a lush creamy texture offering a sweet black and blue fruit flavors with a hint of cherry vanilla.

If you see this wine please try it.  It wasn't real expensive and for you dry red lovers out there, I really enjoyed it.  It just was smooth and different and sometimes tasting the same thing all the time is rather boring.

Two Whites Equals Nothing Wrong

Recently went to Press 626 Cafe & Wine Bar in Norfolk, VA and was able to taste about 10 wines over an hour long tasting and have many to share.  First is the story of two white wines.  Since I don't often talk about whites, here are two great choices.

Tenuta del Cavaliere by Marchetti is an Italian and also knows as Marchetti Tenuta del Cavaliere Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.  This is a Verdicchio that is is a yellow-green grape variety from central Italy responsible for making dry wines of the same color. The variety has been used here for many centuries, and its use has been documented in the Marche region since the 14th Century.

The dry white wines sold under this label are made from the acient Verdicchio grape.
Legend has it that when the troops of the king of the Visigoths, Alarich (370-410), marched on Rome, they were provided with barrels of Verdicchio to maintain their strength.

I enjoyed this white wine with its smoky white pepper notes that mark the very finest Verdicchios. The wine’s rich, mouth-filling pear and melon fruit is backed by intense currents of smoky minerals, riveting acidity, and exotic suggestions of genmaicha tea, chamomile, lemon zest and star fruit. Marchetti’s Verdicchio begs for hearty, rich food. We ate it with seared Ahi Tuna and it was wonderful.  I would also consinder pairing it with other fish or white pizza.  It is an impressive wine from Italy.

The other white wine of the evening was a 2011 Roussanne Tolosa.  It is from a winery in San Louis Obispo, California and they have a solar powered winery.  Their website is here:  www.tolosawinery.com.  The wine is 100% Roussanne which is a grape that most people are not familiar with.  It is usually grown in the Rhone region of France and is often blended with Marsanne.  This is not often found in California

The wine has floral and tropical layers of banana and pineapple with a rich and creamy full bodied finish.  This is a wine I had not tried before and really loved it.  This is a great wine on a summery day and pairs nicely with any seafood or a summer picnic.  Try it, you'll love it.

Spanish Tempranillo - something different

Antano Rioja Crianza Tempranillo is an interesting wine with ruby red aromas of ripe plum and cherry with notes of violets and has an upfront fruit with balanced a nice acidity and an elegant finish that lingers. This would be a great wine with cheeses and tastings.

The wine is made of 85% Temprannillo, 10% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo, from Rioja Alta that is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 12 months in nuutral American and French oak.

Personally, at first, I really enjoyed this wine, but as it lingered  I liked it less and less.  I say try it for yourself and see what you think.  I think it goes well with food, but just to drink by itself, it doesn't hold up.

Here is a little information about the region in Spain where the wine orginiates.

Bodegas Antano is located in the historic town of Briones, in the Rioja Alta sub-appellation of Rioja. The soil throughout Rioja is calcareous. Vines are naturally stressed in this type of soil, developing extensive root systems. Traditionally, vineyards in Rioja Alta were planted predominately with Tempranillo, a noble grape which the Spaniards regard as their finest red variety. This native grape is well suited to the region's subclimate, which is influenced by both the Atlantic and Mediterranean Oceans. Tempranillo is also blended with Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and the indigenous Graciano. Bodegas Antano honors tradition while using modern enological innovation to produce some of the most extraordinary values in Rioja today.

Russian River Valley creates nice wine

Ottimino Zinfandel 2007 received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast in October in 2011.  This wine is high in alcohol (13.9%), in the manner of a ripe Zin.  This is a rich elegant wine and will make you want more.

Ottimino Estate Zinfandel pours a deep burgundy in the glass. The intoxicating nose is filled with aromas of plum, vanilla, oak, and black pepper. The wine is perfectly balanced and tastes of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, licorice, and vanilla. A spicy, long finish is prolonged with lingering notes of vanilla. This is a beautiful Zinfandel. Forget one more glass, I want to have another bottle!

Visit their website at www.otimino.com.  In Pennsylvania the bottle runs about $22 and a great price for a great wine.

Here is some more information I found researching the wine.

VINEYARD: Planted in 2001, the Ottimino vineyard is owned by Brad Alper, an airline pilot by trade, and now gentleman farmer. The vineyards were planted and then grafted with budwood sourced from Lytton Springs Vineyard, Von Weidlich Vineyard, and Rancho Bello Vineyard. At an altitude of 800’, this part of the Russian River Valley remains cool in contrast to Dry Creek Valley, yet receives more sun than lowland Green Valley. Thus producing fruit forward robust wines without the high alcohols that normally accompany zinfandels.

VINTAGE: In the nearly ideal 2007 vintage, bud break in the Ottimino Vineyard was a bit earlier than Rancho Bello and Von Weidlich Vineyards, and its youthful vigor supported both an extensive canopy and an abundance of fruit. Numerous passes were required to bring the vines into balance, and by late summer the final thinning for green and raisined fruit left full, evenly ripened clusters of loosely packed, deep purple berries.

Great Price = Great Taste in this Wine

EOS 2009 Red Zinfendel was a favorite of many at our wine tasting a week ago and I want to share this especially with you.  EOS Estate Winery is located in Paso Robles, California about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco.  The county is subject to similar climatic influences as its northern counterpart in Napa.  You can find more information about EOS Estate Winery here:  http://www.eosvintage.com/index.cfm

This wine was not only enjoyed at our tasting because of the taste, but the price was only $8.99 at the LCB here in York.  I sugges you go now and buy up every bottle you can find.  The 2009 Eos Zinfandel has dark ruby hues of garnet. The aroma exhibits classic peppery Zinfandel spice with raspberry highlights of boysenberry jam. Secondary aromas of cola, briar patch, and sultanas follow. On the palate, the wine is refreshing with zippy acidity and a lush palate. Flavors of jammed raspberries and spiciness persist. The finish is tightly knit and leaves the taster with a refreshed impression making this an excellent food wine.

2009 was a great year in this area for the Zinfandel in the Paso Robles region because it was a cool year that allowed the fruit to barley ripen and therefor exhibited surprising restraint for a Zinfand

Summer Time and a Rose

I love a good Rose wine on a summer day and I found one recently at a wine tasting that I enjoyed.  We hosted a wine tasting this past weekend and did wines from California and chose the Zinfandel.  We didn't have any of the sweet white zinfandel, but went dry and red.

This wine comes from Napa Valley and is called Zin Gris made by the Storybook Mountain Vineyards.  Please note that it may be hard to find as they don't make it every year, but the 2011 version that I had was lovely.  It is patteren after the dry rose wines of Rhone and Provence.  It is aromatic and deeply flavored with a kiss of oak.  This is a rose that comes from a zinfandel grape.

The winery crushes the fully mature grapes and slowly barrel ferment them to the dryness you experience under the cool conditions of their caves.  It would go great with a smoked salmon.  Ask for it at you local wine store.  It is great this time of year on a hot summer day.   You can see other wines from Storybook Mountain at www.storybookwines.com

Farwell Tennessee Durigutti Malbec

I am writing about my last wine that I tasted while working in Tennessee, which was a treat of good friends.  We went to a lovely Jazz Supper Club near Nasville and had a wonderfule meal.  Good friends, good food, good wine, what more is there to ask?

Durigutti Malbec 2011 was one selection for the evening.  This Malbec has a nice dark color with
rustic aromas of currant, chocolate, mocha and leather. Supple and suave but not overly concentrated, with good inner-mouth energy to the flavors of blackberry, chocolate and mint. A rather dry, classic malbec with a savory finish displaying fine tannins and a lingering chocolate note.  We certainly enjoyed it

WineMaker states:  Lush nose laced with black-berry and plum fruit. Soft yet focused on the palate, with additional flavors of strawberry and wild herbs. Medium tannins and balanced acidity.

See more about this and other Durigutti wines at www.durigutti.com

Wine Week at the Beach

Since I was in Delaware last week and I have an upcoming wine tasting the end of July, I thought I would try a bunch of California wines and do some pre-tasting.  I purchased 8 different California wines, mostly Cabernet, but did end up with a few others and was very disappointed.  I must have picked all the worst.  One bottle was so bad I poured it down the drain.  It tasted like grape juice.  YUK.

I will share with you the one I went back for.  It is called Lock & Key Meritage.  It is made by the Trinchero Family Estates and can be found at http://tfewines.com/our-wines/lock-and-key.php.

I did enjoy this wine.  Meritage is fast becoming the US version of Bordeaux.  This blend includes cabernet, merlot and cabernet franc.  It would be a great wine for dinner.

The grapes are sourced from California's prestigious North Coast Appellation.  It has layered blackberry and plum flavors with hints of dark chocolate and tobacco spice.  I also found the finish to be nice, slightly silky.

The price point in Delaware was great too at $10.99 a bottle.  Overall, nicely balanced, fuller bodied, good fruit levels with the smoothness that comes with a blend.

The Seeker Malbec

Tasted this wine last evening and at first taste it was wow, very robust.  I noticed the spice right away.  Let this wine breath about 15 minutes, it gets better.  I think the spice hit me rather in the face at first taste.  This is a new brand that was launched last year from Kobrand, some of their other brands are Cakebread, Benzinger, St. Francis and Sequoia Grove in the United States.  You can see their entire portfolio at www.kobrandwineandspirits.com/about_us/portfolio_directory.  The Seeker Wine's website is www.theseekerwines.com

The wine is handcrafted, selecting the finest Malbec (85%), Bonarda (10%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) grapes which are blended and aged in French oak. Aromas of fresh red fruit and spice dominate. On the palate, this wine is smooth and robust, with juicy, ripe black cherry flavors culminating in a lingering, spicy finish.

South near the border of Texas and Mexico in a little town called Eagle Pass.  I went to some store called HEB, and found an interesting red wine that I had not tried before.  Not sure what HEB stands for, but lets just say, don't go after dark.

The wine is called Trio from Concha Y Toto.  It is from the Rapel Valley in Chile.  It's price point is only about $12-13 in Texas, but they think they don't have taxes on anything in this state and everything Texas does is perfect... I don't think those people have ever been to Eagle Pass.  They might want to start charging taxes on all that big hair to make up for things in this town.

This attractive deep purple and generous assemblage constitutes and expressive wine of soft and velvety tannins with intese aromas of black fruits like black plums and blueberry.

The blend is 70% Merlot + 15% Carmenere + 15% Cabernet Sauvignon

From the attractive blend of Merlot, Carmenere and Cabernet Sauvignon, this assemblage of red grapes produces an expressive deep red wine with soft tannins and great structure. It also has dark fruit, chocolate, and tobacco aromas.  See more on the website at www.trioconchaytoro.com.  Try it some evening with some great appetizers or small plates.

Sequoia Grove Cabernet - NAPA Valley

The best thing about this wine is that I got to share it on my first visit to the Lone Star State with two great friends.  The state that believes the other 49 don't exisit.  The state that thinks red, white, and blue are for Texas.

Dark black purple in color, the nose gives an immediate aroma of dark, smoky chocolate, leading into ripe blackberries and sweet cherries with notes of clove, vanilla and cocoa powder. The palate is smooth and rich with ripe, developed tannins giving the wine a full arc in the mouth and giving flavors of blackberry and a hint of smoky, sweet oak.

Enjoy this wine at your next dinner or share it with family or friends.  You can view other selections on their website at www.sequoiagrove.com.

Finally a White - J. Lohr Estates Chardonnay

While I just love my big and bold reds, I have been tasting a lot more whites lately.  The 2011 J. Lohr Estates Chardonnay is one of this wineries vintages in the last twenty years.  There was above-average rainfall and unseasonably cool summers that produced an outstanding varietal.

The Chardonnay shows ripe apple, citrus, and nectarine flavors with high levels of natural grape acidity.  By incorporating higher levels of malolactic fermentation to balance the acidity, they created a wine with intense vatietal character, palate weight and palate-cleansing acidity.

WINEMAKER'S COMMENTS
This elegant Chardonnay has an attractive pale strawyellow color. The aromas are of nectarine, pear and apple, combined with a perfumed roasted hazelnut and butterscotch bouquet from the barrel fermentation and sur lie aging. The flavors are very soft with ripe pear, tangelo citrus and vanilla toastiness, producing layers of complexity with a silky balance of fresh fruit acidity and palate weight.
Jeff Meier, Winemaker

FOOD PAIRINGS
Pair with dishes such as lobster pappardelle with chive butter, grilled late summer vegetables and creamy butternut squash soup.

Wines from India and Black Stallion Cabernet

I know it has been a while since I posted... well that is what being out of the country does.  I wanted to share that most Indian wines aren't real great.  I tried several and decided to stick with French and Italian.

Earlier this week, I tried the Black Stallion Cabernet from Napa.  After looking at their website, they are a releatively new winery.

The 2010 Cabernet is firmly built and serves up black fruit, sweet dust and a savory barrel in the flavors; sturdy; smooth tannins.

If you are looking for a nice smooth Cabernet, that isn't as complex, I think you will really like it.  I think it would be great for people just venturing into the Cabernet world.  Happy Tasting.

Girard Old Vines Zinfandel

Last night for dinner we tried a new wine.  We all enjoyed every sip and if you find this at your local wine store, I highly recommend it.  Girard Old Vine Zinfandel is from Napa Valley and it is bold and complex with a dark ruby color.  The aromas offer dark chocolate covered cherries, blueberries, and plums.  Winter spices and underlying layers of mocha round out this powerful wine.  The tannins will present a soft structure and are well integrated in the wine

Girard 2010 Old Vine Zinfandel is sourced from the Godward vineyard in Calistoga and Morgan vineyards on Mt. Vaca. Mt. Vaca is the highest peak of the Vaca range, which forms the Eastern border of the Napa Valley. The fruit concentration from these vineyards ensure that this Old Vine Zinfandel has rich flavor extraction, a fruit-forward palate and wonderful layers of complexity from multiple soil types.

The grapes were hand-sorted and crushed to stainless steel fermentors. Pumpovers were done as gently as possible to avoid undesirable harsh tannin extraction. Pressed at dryness into 35% new oak, primarily French, with a small percentage of American and Hungarian oak, as well.  Visit their website at www.girardwinery.com.

Cryptic California Red Blend 2010

I just tried this wine tonight and am really enjoyed the first few sips.  It reminds me a lot of a Zinfandel and would go great with a chocolate tasting.  The wine seemed not as great the more I drank it and seemd to flatten out.  Cryptic California Red Wine 2010.  Cryptic refers to the mysterious alchemy that comes from combining individual lots of wine together to create a magical blend.  I believe it would be greatly paired with a chocolate tasting, but not strong enought for dinner.

The 3 C's on their encryption wheel each represent one of three varietal components: Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each grape varietal adds a unique characteristic to the blend. The zinfandel component is brimming with brambly, intense red berry flavors. Inky, intense Petite Sirah provides depth and color and concentration, while elegantly structured, silky Cabernet Sauvignon adds polish and complexity.   Zinfandel can have a bold, slightly spicy flavor profile, but occasionally it can get too jammy. Haun Meritage

Haun Meritage
Feburary 23, 2013

Haun Winery in Soledad, California makes a great Meritage. Meritage is a blend similar to a Bordeaux style wine in France. Haun's Mertiage is layered and full bodied blend of Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The 2010 Vintage evokes aromas of raspberry, blueberry, and vanilla. Rich and wonderfully focused, this classic Bordeaux-style blend is approachable yet complex. On the palate it serves up an array of flavors—currant, black cherry, and caramelized toasty oak. Supple tannins help lend weight to this wine’s rich mouth feel. Flavors of tobacco and cloves linger on its smooth finish. Check out their website at www.haunwinery.com for more information about this great wine.
