Girard Old Vines Zinfandel

Last night for dinner we tried a new wine.  We all enjoyed every sip and if you find this at your local wine store, I highly recommend it.  Girard Old Vine Zinfandel is from Napa Valley and it is bold and complex with a dark ruby color.  The aromas offer dark chocolate covered cherries, blueberries, and plums.  Winter spices and underlying layers of mocha round out this powerful wine.  The tannins will present a soft structure and are well integrated in the wine

Girard 2010 Old Vine Zinfandel is sourced from the Godward vineyard in Calistoga and Morgan vineyards on Mt. Vaca. Mt. Vaca is the highest peak of the Vaca range, which forms the Eastern border of the Napa Valley. The fruit concentration from these vineyards ensure that this Old Vine Zinfandel has rich flavor extraction, a fruit-forward palate and wonderful layers of complexity from multiple soil types.

The grapes were hand-sorted and crushed to stainless steel fermentors. Pumpovers were done as gently as possible to avoid undesirable harsh tannin extraction. Pressed at dryness into 35% new oak, primarily French, with a small percentage of American and Hungarian oak, as well.  Visit their website at www.girardwinery.com.

Cryptic California Red Blend 2010

I just tried this wine tonight and am really enjoyed the first few sips.  It reminds me a lot of a Zinfandel and would go great with a chocolate tasting.  The wine seemed not as great the more I drank it and seemd to flatten out.  Cryptic California Red Wine 2010.  Cryptic refers to the mysterious alchemy that comes from combining individual lots of wine together to create a magical blend.  I believe it would be greatly paired with a chocolate tasting, but not strong enought for dinner.

The 3 C's on their encryption wheel each represent one of three varietal components: Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Each grape varietal adds a unique characteristic to the blend. The zinfandel component is brimming with brambly, intense red berry flavors. Inky, intense Petite Sirah provides depth and color and concentration, while elegantly structured, silky Cabernet Sauvignon adds polish and complexity.   Zinfandel can have a bold, slightly spicy flavor profile, but occasionally it can get too jammy. Haun Meritage

Haun Meritage
Feburary 23, 2013

Haun Winery in Soledad, California makes a great Meritage. Meritage is a blend similar to a Bordeaux style wine in France. Haun's Mertiage is layered and full bodied blend of Cabernet sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The 2010 Vintage evokes aromas of raspberry, blueberry, and vanilla. Rich and wonderfully focused, this classic Bordeaux-style blend is approachable yet complex. On the palate it serves up an array of flavors—currant, black cherry, and caramelized toasty oak. Supple tannins help lend weight to this wine’s rich mouth feel. Flavors of tobacco and cloves linger on its smooth finish. Check out their website at www.haunwinery.com for more information about this great wine.
